Football and War Part 1: Juventus

What's the link between Khadafi, Juventus and merchandising ?

This is a picture of  Khadafi-soldiers arrested by anti-Khadafi people. So far so good, but when you take a better look at the picture you see the emblem of Juventus FC. Ouch. Not only because of the image it selves and the negative brand-awareness, but the link between Khadafi and Juventus is also quite dubious. Khadafi has made one of the biggest sponsordeals in history of football with his company Tamoil. On the other picture we can see Saadi Khadafi (the son of) in better times and celebrating the Supercoppa Italia in Tripoli with Juventus FC.

Marketing managers of football clubs can't influence or prevent this kind of issues. By the start of the protests on the Tahrir-area in Egypt brands like Coca-Cola and McDonalds removed their ads and bill-boards in order to prevent negative brand-associations. Brands can't remove clothes from the street. In every African war we have seen and we will see young african people walking in football merchandise. For a manager it is not nice to see 'your supporters' walking with a sword, a knife or a AK-47.In the weeks I will look for Beckham, Zidane and Ronaldo in warzone. I am very sure they are present.

Remains the question: Who is the former arrested Juve-player on the left picture? (it's not Sunday Oliseh)

//Update: Please take a look at the original photos from Reuters. There are also two Real Madrid players in the line-up.

  1. It's just some guy wearing Juve gear. When i wear Levi's it doesn't mean i work in a clothes factory.

How do you know the picture is of Khadafi-soldiers arrested by anti-Khadafi people, it just looks like some random picture to me.

Juve won the Italian Super Cup, had it been Parma who won then Gaddafi would have been in a picture with Parma instead. Not a big deal.

I know that is just some guy, but it's ironic to see him in a juventus shirt keeping in mind the sponsordeal with Tamoil (kadhaffi).

  3. Those pictures also show one of the guys wearing Real Madrid gear and another guy wearing Milan gear, but you choose the only photo that exculsively shows a guy wearing Juve gear to support your blog.

Re-write you blog to say "but the link between Khadafi and Juventus/Real Madrid/Milan is also quite dubious."

Your blog is written with an agenda sprinkled on top, that is all i am saying, so the readers are aware too.
